Its main use is in the manufacture of plaster products including wall and ceiling boards, mouldings, and blocks for construction use, as well as sculpturing plasters, medical and dental uses and pottery. These uses rely on the relative ease with which gypsum loses and then regains its water of crystallisation.

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO. 2H2O. It is widely mined and is used as a fertilizer and as the main constituent in many forms of plaster, drywall and blackboard or sidewalk chalk. Gypsum also crystallizes as translucent crystals of selenite.

Drilling and blasting is the primary method of quarrying gypsum. Quarry benches are generally about 25 feet in height. Hydraulic rotary drilling and auger drilling are commonly used. Gypsum is soft but relatively difficult to blast due to its high elasticity which is similar to a block of hard rubber
